Orthopaedics Q & A

What is orthopaedics?

Orthopaedics is a medical specialty that diagnoses and treats problems affecting your musculoskeletal system.

Orthopaedic specialists –– like those at Mercer-Bucks Orthopaedics (MBO) –– have extensive training. In addition to traditional medical school, they completed five years of study in an orthopaedic residency. Many of our doctors have also had advanced fellowship training in an orthopaedic subspecialty.  This knowledge and expertise ensure quality care and lasting treatment outcomes.

What conditions does orthopaedics treat?

At MBO, the board-certified orthopaedic specialists diagnose and treat various conditions, including:

  • Joint pain
  • Bone fractures
  • Soft tissue injuries (muscles, tendons, and ligaments)
  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Nerve compression
  • Overuse injuries
  • Work related injuries

The providers also treat congenital conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system, like scoliosis (abnormal curvature of the spine).

What happens during an orthopaedics appointment?

At MBO, the orthopaedic specialists tailor appointments to each individual’s needs.

Before making any recommendations for treatment, your provider reviews your medical records and asks about your symptoms, including when they started and if they respond to at-home treatments like ice, rest, or activity modification.

Next, your provider conducts a physical exam. During the exam, they inspect the part of your body causing problems.

For example, if you suffer from heel pain, your provider looks at your foot to check for signs of bruising or swelling. They also gently press on your heel and have you walk around the exam room to assess your gait. If necessary, they might also order blood work or diagnostic imaging to rule out underlying issues.

After making a diagnosis, your MBO provider develops a custom treatment plan to help you feel better.

What are some common orthopaedic treatments?

At MBO, the orthopaedic specialists provide a variety of different treatments. Depending on your age and the severity of your symptoms, they might recommend:

  • Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication
  • Physical therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Osteopathic manual therapy
  • Dry Needling
  • Orthobiologics
  • Durable medical equipment
  • Pain management injections

If minimally invasive treatments don’t provide lasting relief, or your symptoms get worse, your provider might recommend surgery. The orthopaedic specialists at MBO perform traditional open orthopaedic surgery and minimally invasive surgery.
